Our combination microwave/air fryer/oven has this cool function where after the timer hits 0 but before it beeps, it keeps turning until it is back in the original position (so if you have, for example, a coffee cup in there, the handle will face the same direction as it did when put in. That buffer to pull it out without beeping was kind of amazing.
Always sounds like a siren at 3am.
Many microwaves allow silencing
Winter, 1987
Dec 14.
It was a Monday.
Snow hadn’t fallen yet but the cold was always familiar by then.
I had just started watching The Price Is Right.
I stopped the microwave at 00:00.
It was just me, my pastel blue plastic plate warmed by the cut up hot dog resting on top and Bob.
Bob called another contestant down.
I don’t remember what the showcase was that day, but still, it’s a day I’ll never forget.
I get irrationally angry when people leave time on the microwave without then clearing it.
My microwave is so old the hum of the transformer is louder than the worn out bell that signals when it’s done. Eventually i’ll pillage the transformer out of another one to keep it going. I refuse to lose the mechanical dials that are on it.
The mechanical dials bit makes me jealous. I have a fancy new one that has a drawer mechanism and is built in under the counter.
It has settings to disable the chime, the 30 second “omg your food is still in the microwave” reminder, and even all sounds.
But doing anything that isn’t just pushing a couple numbers and start is hopeless. Defrost or “melt”? Enter the food code (???) then the weight (just guess randomly at the units and start over if you’re wrong). I just run at 30% power to defrost the occasional thing now.
House abducts kids now?
wilsons gonna hate this prank
He’s just stopping the kid from microwaving Lupus.
More like diffusing a bomb at 1s mark.
Do any microwaves not do that?
You mean, beep when they’re finished?
Many microwaves have a semi-hidden feature to mute all sounds. Usually involves long-pressing one of the number buttons.
Yes, I do. I hate the finish beep. I have some kind of sound sensitivity. But even so, it’s completely unnecessary.
If I don’t give my microwave overlord my immediate attention and open the door, and give it a round of applause, it punishes me with a second loud beep.
I’ve scoured the manual and there is no mention of a way to turn off. I will try some long number presses.
I can turn mine off on my Toshiba
Oh that’s good to know, thank you. Toshiba, noted!
Mine is Samsung. We have one of their tumble dryers too. Its beep is not as painful as the microwave, but it has annoying music.
